The Australian Government has decided to extend the punitive tariffs on imported goods from Russia and Belarus for an additional two years, now in effect until October 2025. Australia is collaborating closely with its international allies to apply pressure on Russia. This involves targeted sanctions and trade measures aimed at undermining Russia's ability to finance its unlawful and unethical activities in Ukraine. The supplementary 35 percent tariff on Russian imports was initially implemented in April 2022. Coupled with restrictions on the import of gold and energy, it has significantly impacted trade between the two nations.
In the latter half of the previous year, imports from Russia dropped by more than 95 percent compared to the same period in 2021. Australia once again urges Russia to promptly withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territory and calls on Belarus to cease supporting Russia's unjustified conflict. Australia reaffirms its steadfast support for Ukraine's sovereignty and its people.
