On 28 January 2026, an online signing ceremony marked the conclusion of a Friendship Agreement between the Nikopol District of Dnipropetrovsk Region, Ukraine, and the South Burnett Regional Council of Queensland, Australia.

The Agreement was signed on the Ukrainian side by Mr Dmytro Bychkov, Acting Head of the Nikopol District Council, and on the Australian side by Ms Kathy Duff Mayor of the South Burnett Regional Council and South Burnett CEO Mr Mark Pitt.

The event was attended by Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia, H.E. Vasyl Myroshnychenko, as well as representatives of both communities. A statement was also delivered on behalf of the Embassy during the ceremony.

The signed document provides a framework for cooperation in the fields of culture, education, sport, business, information exchange, and other mutually beneficial areas, fostering direct people-to-people and community-to-community engagement.

During the discussion, particular attention was drawn to the impact of Russia’s war on everyday life in Nikopol, especially on children. Australian partners noted that even symbolic gestures of support, information sharing, and engagement through sport and culture help restore hope and a sense of connection for Ukrainian children living under constant threat.

With the facilitation of the Embassy and the involvement of the Ukrainian community in Australia, opportunities for cooperation in the areas of sport and culture were discussed, with a particular focus on community and youth engagement. Nikopol also noted its interest in cultural and artistic activities for children related to Australia and Ukrainian–Australian cooperation.

This Friendship Agreement is a strong example of how local communities can build meaningful international partnerships, grounded in solidarity, shared values, and support for future generations.
