On 11 February 2026, H.E. Mr Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to Australia, delivered an address at the National Press Club of Australia entitled “Russia’s War on Ukraine: An Alternative Narrative.”
In his remarks, the Ambassador outlined why Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine has significance far beyond Europe, underscoring its direct implications for Australia’s security, economic interests, and the broader global strategic environment. He challenged a number of false narratives promoted by Russia, including claims of military success, peaceful intent, and superpower status.
The Ambassador highlighted the role of disinformation and propaganda in modern conflict and stressed the need for middle powers, including Australia, to actively and publicly counter false narratives. He emphasised that Russia’s aggression represents not only an attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty, but also a threat to international law, democratic values, and global security.
Mr Myroshnychenko expressed Ukraine’s deep gratitude to Australia for its military, humanitarian, and energy assistance, and called for continued leadership by middle powers in strengthening sanctions, countering Russian disinformation, and supporting a just, durable, and irreversible peace for Ukraine based on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The address was nationally and internationally broadcast and formed part of activities marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s illegal and unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
