Humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and Australia began before our country proclaimed its independence.

In 1985, Australian Prime Minister John Howard (then leader of the opposition) unveiled a monument to the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine near the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canberra.

In 2007, the Ukrainian Orthodox Center in Canberra unveiled the sculpture "Shevchenko's Thoughts", which was donated by the Kyiv City State Administration to the diaspora in Australia in 2002.

A key humanitarian project in 2018 was the participation of the Ukrainian team in the Invictus Games in Sydney.

After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, the Australian Government provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine totaling about 57 million USD. This was channeled through the UN and the Red Cross.

The Australian side also donated 6.2 million USD for the border protection and cyber-security of Ukraine; 7 thousand USD for radiation protection purposes and 500 thousand USD - for respective personal protection kits; 143 thousand USD was allocated for the chemical protection purposes (through the OPCW).

In April 2023, Victoria State Government (Australia) transferred about 335000 USD (through the Ukraine24 platform) for the needs of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (for reconstruction of Mykolaiv Municipal traumatology center).
